Our Swedish Sholin Ancestors,

Beginning with Jonas Sholin as representative of all the  children of Johan Jonsson Sjölin and Kerstin Rolig Roberg

Forward

A genealogy is always a work in progress, and there is still much to do on this one. But while I’ve been working on this since 1988, an entire generation has grown up.  So perhaps waiting until perfection is achieved is not a good idea! After all, our children should be the ultimate recipients of our family history. At the urging of Dave Guss, who has generously provided this website, I previously submitted the ancestry of Johan Jonsson Sjölin, also known as John Sholin, promising to eventually send that of his wife.

With this edition, the genealogy of Christine Sholin is included so everyone can get a better picture of our ancestors in Sweden. Christine is shown below as Kerstin Rolig Roberg. This is as close as I could get to using her “maiden name,” as is proper in a genealogical report. To combine the genealogies of Johan and Christine, one has to start with one of the children. Jonas was my pick to represent the first generation of our Sholin family genealogy going back in time.

In this report, Jonas is designated number 1. He can be found with that number in the section labeled, “Generation No. 1.”  In this capacity, Jonas is serving also as a surrogate for the other children of Johan and Kerstin who lived to come eventually to America: Johan, Peter, Christine, Andrew, Olaf, Charles, and Edward. All the ancestors listed here are also their ancestors.

Reading this report

Since Jonas is number 1, his father and mother are numbers 2 and 3.  In the report, any particular person’s father is twice the number of that person, and his mother is twice that person’s number plus one.

Note: this numbering system does not apply to people listed with small-case Roman numerals, such as iii or iv.  Those listed that way are the children of direct ancestors. Only our direct ancestors are listed with Arabic numerals, such as 5, 6 or 7.  These include fathers, mothers, grandfathers, grandmothers and so forth.  When shown with their birth families, our direct ancestors are numbered with both a small-case Roman numeral and with an Arabic number.

Example Number One:   Kerstin Rolig Roberg is number 3.   If you scroll down far enough, you will find her father, Johan Rolig Roberg at number 6 (3+3=6).  Kerstin’s mother is located at number 7 (3+3+1=7).  She is Kerstin Olsdotter.

To find the father of #6, Johan Rolig Roberg, you must double Johan’s number.  Number 12 is Lars Andersson Rolig. Add one more number to Johan’s father’s number, and you will find Johan Rolig Roberg’s mother, number 13, Kristina Jansdotter Tallström.

Example Number Two: The father of number 7, Kerstin Olsdotter, is number 14 (7+7=14), Olof Nilsson Grip.  Her mother is one number more, number 15,  Sarah Pehersdotter.

Double Olof Nilsson Grip’s number, 14, and you will find his father, #28, Nils Olsson Rehnberg.  To find Olof Nilsson Grip’s mother, simply add one more to the number of his father, # 29, Kierstin Pehrsdotter.

Sarah Pehersdotter is number 15. Double Sarah's number to 30 to find her father, Pehr Ersson. One more number will be 31, Catharina Olsdotter, Sarah’s mother.

Note: If you are not clear as to how your own Sholin line relates, substitute your particular ancestor, say, Olaf or Charles, for Jonas.  Make your ancestor number 1, whose father and mother are numbers 2 and 3, Johan Jonsson Sjölin and Kerstin Rolig Roberg.  You only need to change who is number one.

Addenda

1)      The Alfta Släktbok, or Alfta Family Book, is a very large work that includes the cross-referenced genealogies of everyone who lived in the Swedish parish of Alfta as far back as the parish records record.  It may be found in large Swedish libraries. The work is as good as the genealogists who read the records, and it appears they were very good indeed.

2)      The ancestor we have known as Christine Sholin used several different names during her lifetime.  Some of us have known her maiden name as “Rolig.”  Others have known it as “Roberg.”  Earlier, since she was a daughter of a man whose given name was Johan, she used the maiden name, “Jansdotter.”  In addition to checking Alfta Släktbok, I’ve also found original records with the help of Kjell Bjurman of Bollnäs, Sweden, showing that each surname was used by Christine at various times while she lived in Sweden.  Her father sometimes used the surname, “Rolig,” and sometimes, “Roberg.”  As to Christine’s first name, Swedish records show her using both “Kerstin,” and “Cherstin.”

3)      In order to find a genealogy record in Sweden, one must know the place to look (the parish), the name of the person, and the date on which that person was born.  This is true of America, as well, but even more so in Sweden because so many people used the same few names.

4)      Each of the children of Johan Jonsson Sjölin and Kerstin Rolig Roberg are listed here with “Jonsson” as a sort of middle name.  Actually, when they were born, each of these children used “Jonsson” as a surname.  They may not have used their father’s “soldier-name” until they came to America.  The earliest records of Peter and Jonas show some experimentation with the spelling before they finally “codified” the name into an Americanized, “Sholin.”

5)      There are many Sholin descendants in this country.  In addition, there is a huge  family of descendants of other ancestors in this line who have never used the name Sholin.  For instance, there are numerous descendants of Andrew Jonsson Printz and Peter Jonsson Nord, who were both brothers of Johan Jonsson Sjölin.  In addition, I have found Swedish and American descendants of our ancestor, Olof Nilsson Grip, grandfather of Kerstin Rolig Roberg.

Olof’s daughter, Sara Olsdotter, married Lars Gran.  They had two children who came to America, Jonas Larsson Wallberg and Per Larsson Kraft.  Jonas Larsson Walberg changed his name to Jonas Walberg, and Per changed his name to Peter Norlund.  Both men brought their families to America in 1869, living first in Illinois a short time before coming to Kansas.

That is the same year that Andrew Printz brought his whole family, his previous mother-in-law, as well as the oldest son of Johan Jonsson Sjölin, Johan Johansson to America.  Andrew Printz and his family went first to Illinois for a very short time, and then to Kansas.  It is not known what happened to Johan Johansson, also known as Jan Jansson.  The rest of these people had many descendants scattered all over America.

Olof Nilsson Grip also had children who did not come to America.  Some of his Swedish descendants are known to me.  Keep in mind that each one of our Swedish ancestors who had children in Sweden may have many descendants in America, Sweden, or perhaps even in other countries. This is one reason why a genealogy is always a work in progress.

Appreciation: Genealogies don’t happen in a vacuum.  I am indebted to the many Sholin family descendants who filled out family group sheets and sent other all kinds of other materials, as well. You never know where there will be clues! There were also other people, some only related to families who are related to ours, who gave a tremendous amount of help.  Others were simply genealogists who like to help other genealogists.  To all of these, I continue to be very grateful.  I apologize that I cannot list them all, though a few may appear below.   I also very much appreciate those who contributed money to the Sholin Newsletter.  The mailings cost a lot, but I learned a lot about our family while it was being published. Many thanks to all of you who have made this project possible and who continue to add to the story.

A request: I will appreciate anything anyone can add so future editions might be more accurate.  Also, please send me your email address if you are related to this family.  Email is the quickest and least expensive way to communicate with you. You will find me, Virginia Sholin Smallwood, at ksmallwd@thegrid.net

Generation No. 1

      1.  Jonas Jonsson Sholin1,2,3, born 11 Jul 1851 in Kyrkbyn, Alfta parish, Hälsingland, Gävleborgs län, Sweden4,5; died 06 Jun 1913 in Portland, Multnomah, Oregon6,7.  He was the son of 2. Johann Jonsson Sjölin and 3. Kerstin Rolig Roberg.  He married (1) Johanna Sophia Hansen8,9 06 Apr 1883 in Rennic, Randolph , Missouri10,11,12,13.  She was born Dec 1864 in Hälsingland, Gävleborg län, Sweden14,15, and died 29 Jan 1932 in Salem,  Marion, Oregon16,17,18,19.  She was the daughter of John Hanson and Unknown.

Notes for Jonas Jonsson Sholin:

The following information was obtained from Frank David Sholin's passport (information sent by Paul David Sholin): born 7 July 1851 "Alta Socken["Socken" means "Parish"], Helsingland, Sweden."  He also said Jonas obtained U.S. citizenship from Multnomah County Court, Portland, Oregon, 1 May 1900.  He died 11 June 1913 at 1:23 o'clock in Portland, Oregon and was buried 14 June 1913 at Mt. Scott Park, Hillside Section from 360 Lincoln St #124.  Also listed was the notation: 414 e. Alda St.

The name of Mt. Scott Park Cemetery and Crematorium was changed to Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery around 1926.  In the Polk's Portland City Directories it was Mount Scott in the 1926 directory and Lincoln Memorial in the 1927 directory.

According to Gladys Sholin Burton, her father, had this story:  Jonas and Sophia traveled from Kansas to Oregon via the Oregon Trail in a horse and buggy.  The buggy was sold someplace and Jonas worked on the railroad to get enough money so they could continue to Oregon.

Jonas was listed variously as James, Jonas, John, and Johanas.

The 1910 Federal Census Index lists Jonas and his family as follows:

SHOLIN, Jonas, white, age 58, born in Sweden, enumerated in Portland -35, Multnomah Co., OR

Notes for Johanna Sophia Hansen:

Sophia's father's name was likely Hansson in Sweden.  "Hansen" is the spelling used mostly in Denmark and Norway.  The Swedes use " - sson" as a name suffix, doubling the "s" using an "o," instead of an "e."

According Frank David Sholin's passport from the 30's (info. sent by Paul David Sholin), Sophia was born 27 Jan 1865 in Baggbo, St. Tuna, Dalarne, Sweden.  This is contrary to information on the other page as is the following from the same source: Sophia died 29 Jan 1931 and is buried beside Jonas  (Jonas listed at Mt. Scott Park, Hillside Section l from 360 Lincoln St. #124.  Also listed was the following: 414 E. Alda St.)

Generation No. 2

      2.  Johann Jonsson Sjölin54,55, born 20 Mar 1828 in Kyrkbyn, Alfta, Hälsingland, Gävleborg, Sweden56,57,58,59,60; died Abt. 1896 in probably in Kansas.  He was the son of 4. Jonas Olsson Ehn and 5. Brita Jansdotter.  He married 3. Kerstin Rolig Roberg 21 Apr 1850 in Alfta, Hälsingland, Gävleborg, Sweden61,62.

      3.  Kerstin Rolig Roberg63,64,65, born 28 Aug 1831 in Norrby, Alfta, Hälsingland, Gavleborg, Sweden66,67,68,69,70,71,72; died 23 Jan 1911 in Arleta, now part of Portland, Multnomah, Oregon73,74,75.  She was the daughter of 6. Johan Rolig Roberg and 7. Kerstin Olsdotter.

Notes for Johann Jonsson Sjölin:

Johann Jonsson joined the Swedish army.  In the army, he was first given the surname of Schön and then Sjölin. This was common practice in Sweden, a land where there was not a large diversity of surnames.  If a sergeant was to call out for Jon Jonsson, for instance, he'd have had a lot of Jons saying the Swedish equivalent of, "Yes, Sir!"  To solve this problem, soldiers who had common names like Jonsson were given "soldier names."  This is how our family got the name Sholin.  Somewhere along the line, either Johan, himself, or perhaps his sons, decided to keep the name, Sjölin.  When they came to "Amerika" the brothers, especially Jonas, tried different versions of the name, to make it more "American."  In various documents I've verified to be those of Jonas, are the following surnames: Sjholin, Sjolin, Sholine, and finally, Sholin.  Jonas came to America a few years before his parents and two youngest brothers, and he seems to have been the last one to "codify" his name as Sholin.

Johan, his wife, and two youngest sons emigrated to America on 10 October 1884.  At first, they lived with Johan's brother, Andrew Printz. (Known as Anders Jonsson Printz in Sweden, he had acquired his surname, Printz, in the Swedish Army.] In the 1885 Kansas State Census, Johan was shown as John Sholen, still another form of the name.  Andrew seems to have been doing rather well by the time his older brother and family came to America:

-----------------------------------

Notice that John Sholen's occupation in Sweden is listed as a shoe maker.  He probably also had a small plot of land on which to farm, though that is not mentioned in the 1885 census.  Many of our Swedish ancestors served in the military.  Every municipal district had to have a certain number of men who served, and often these posts would be taken over by someone else, who sometimes even took over the name used by the previous person in that position.  These soldiers often had small plots of land for raising crops when they weren't actively serving in the military.

Notes for Anders Jonsson:

This is not the same Anders as his brother, Anders Jonsson, the one we know as Andrew Sholin.  In Sweden, if a child died and another was born, the younger brother or sister would often be given the same name as the one who had died.

                     v.   Christine Jonssdotter153,154,155, born 10 Apr 1860 in Kyrkbyn, Alfta parish, Hälsingland, Gävleborgs län, Sweden156,157,158; died Bef. 1946 in (most likely) The United States159; married Karl August Soderberg 29 Jul 1877 in Sandarne Parish, Sweden160; born 06 Nov 1849 in Husby, Dalarnas län, Sweden161,162,163; died Aft. 03 Jul 1891 in (most likely) The United States.

Notes for Christine Jonssdotter:

[See husband, Karl August Söderberg for explanation of the place where they lived in 1890.]

Christine's life must have been incredibly difficult.  When she was just a child, her slightly older brother, the first of her parents' children to be named Andrew, died at the age of nine. In 1869, her oldest brother, Johan Johansson, age  left Sweden forever with his uncle, Anders (Andrew Printz). Christine was nine years old.

It is difficult to imagine, now, how families were torn apart by one or more members emigrating to America.  In 1869, the voyage was still dangerous and expensive.  Most families never saw each other again. More than one mother was known to have said that saying "goodbye" at the dock was like going to the family member's funeral.

Karl-Johan[Carl], Christine's first child, was listed in parish records as a "love child," which may have caused some scandal, though this was not so unusual a situation.  Nevertheless, Karl August Söderberg married her a few months later, in July of 1877.  He was, to all appearances, the natural father.  Christine's new family was uprooted several times before settling down at Alnö, Västernorrlands län, in Hälsingland.  Life there was hard.  Christine gave birth to nine children in all, only to see them die, one by one, until only two sons were left, her oldest, and her next to youngest child, Frans (Frank).

Christine's third child, Johanna Kristina, born in 1880, passed away the year after Christine's brothers, Jonas and Peter, emigrated in 1881. The second child lost was Selma, who lived only a month after her birth in November, 1886.  Then two more brothers, Olaf and the younger Andrew, probably emigrated together in 1882.   By 1884, the last of Christine's birth family had emigrated to America: her mother, father and two youngest brothers, Charlie and Edward.

In July, 1891, Christine's husband, Karl August, and her oldest son, Karl Johan, left for America.  It is not known if Karl August remained in America, or if he returned to Sweden.  Karl Johan is the Carl Soderberg with the peg leg, who met Ann Sholin at the dock in Homer, Alaska.

Then, between 1898 and 1909, four more of Christine's children: Anna Maria, age 19; Oskar Vilhelm, age 22; Axel August, age 21, and Lydia, age 21 all died of pulmonary tuberculosis.  The last child to die in Sweden was Elsa, age 13, cause of death, unknown.

Frank left Sweden sometime between 1906 and 1915, though an earlier date seems more probable.  Finally, Christine emigrated to America, herself, the rest of her family having either died or emigrated.  In

November of 1913, Christine left Sweden using the name, Christina Sholin.

In the 1990's, there were still a few who remembered her as a nice, old lady who spoke only Swedish.  A few also remembered her sons, Carl and Frank.  It is not known if either Carl or Frank married or had children.  Christine and her sons lived in Alaska for a time, and at least Christine lived just down the street from her brother, Charlie Sholin and his family, in San Francisco, in the mid-1920's.

Notes for Karl August Soderberg:

Ros-Marie Lindberg of Habo, Sweden looked up the following information about Alnö, where Karl Söderburg worked before emigrating to America.

The 1890 Swedish Census lists Karl August Söderburg, along with his family.  After his name were the Swedish words, "Hofvid ångsåg och lastageplats."  Ros-Marie said this was a company in Hofsudde-Hovid on the island of Alnö in the bay, Sundvallsbukten, outside Sundsvall in Sweden.  The company existed between 1860 and 1943.  "Ångsåg" means "sawmill" in English.  The sawmills were driven with steam in the old days.  "Ånga" means "steam."  "Lastageplats" or "lastplats" in modern Swedish is the place in a marina where timber is loaded onto boats.

Here is some background information about Alnö:

On the island of Alnö, a small village grew up around the sawmills, drawing workers from all over Sweden and the rest of Scandinavia, as well. Housing for the workers went up fast, but the first ones were cramped and not very clean.

The Temperance movement and Free churches (not part of the Swedish Lutheran Church) became very popular on the island.  The sawmill bosses didn't mind their employees attending meetings.  But, when the sawmill workers began to talk about union business, the bosses were not pleased.  Later, of course, a trade union was organized anyway.

Karl Söderburg did not stay very long in this place.  On 3 July 1891, he emigrated from Alnö to America.

Marriage Notes for Olaf Sholin and Caroline Gustavsson:

Olaf and Caroline were married by a probate judge. Before their marriage, they both were shown on the 1895 Kansas State Census as having lived in Illinois before coming to Kansas.  Did they meet there? We know Olaf was in Chicago for awhile when he was in the army.  Chicago was an important destination for single Swedish women who found work as domestics.  It that the story of Caroline's immigration to America?

Notes for Andrew Jonsson Sholin:

Andrew had a Homestead of 160 acres in Homer, Alaska.

There is a reference to Andrew Sholin in, "In those Days: Alaska Pioneers of the Lower Kenai Peninsula," Pioneers of Alaska, Igloo 32, Auxiliary 14, Homer, Alaska, page 63.  1923: "He dropped us off and Andrew Sholin, who lived close by, brought his horse and hauled our household goods up to a log cabin...the only one close to the beach.  As we were getting closer to the land we noticed how open the land was,  mostly fields of grass that grew six feet high in some places, with just a few patches of small trees here and there.

It seems like everyone moved into Andrew's home in Homer.  He even built himself his "own" log cabin nearby.  (See Ann Sholin's article.)

From National Archives Record Group: 049 on Andrew's homestead property in Homer, Alaska: Anchorage 04052, patent #945930, there was a document in the file dated 21 April, 1923.  In it were listed the following cultivation and improvements: "Hewed log house 18x22  1 1/2 story with lean-to 8x10 and 10x12.  Log cabin 14x18, log barn 16x30, frame storehouse 8x10, 18 fox houses 4x6, hoghouse 6x6, 1000 feet picket fence, 5000feet woven wire fox fence, 6 acres plowed and 11 acres cleared for meadow. Has 60 silver foxes, 1 horse, 20 Siberian hares."  Further it stated that Andrew, "established residence on the land under Forest Service permit July 15, 1915.  He maintained continuous residence."

On the Final Affidavit Required of Homestead Claimants, dated 6 Ot 1923, is a list of crops that were planted and harvested each year.  For 1923, Andrew had planted and harvested 6 acres of potatoes, vegetables, and timothy.  On Section 17, he had 9 or 10 acres of haylands and no buildings.  On Section 20, the larger house was valued at $1000; the smaller one at $100; the barn at $200; a meat house, 10x12 at $50; a root house at $50; 19 fox pens at $3800; and fencing at $50.  These were Andrew's estimates.  It is an interesting sidelight into human character that his witnesses, Mrs. Dalfena Woodward and Stanton Shafer, made cost estimates that were, for the fox pens, considerably lower - $2000 and $1500 respectively.  The estimated values of the rest of the property were much closer to Andrew's estimate.  Either Woodward and Shafer didn't know about fox pen values or Andrew's figures reflected his emotions about his chosen career!

With a letter dated 12 Jul 1932, the Department of the Interior finally returned Andrew's Certificate of Citizenship, given 2 May 1900 through the County Court, Multnomah County, Oregon.  Back in 1922, Andrew had sent it to the Department of Interior (probably as required) with his Homestead Entry No. 04052!  (Good thing we now have photocopiers!)  We do not have this original document, but a copy should be available through the Multnomah County Court.

Notes for Pehr Jonsson Nord:

The Alfta Släktbok, 1B19, lists the following for Pehr Jonsson-Nord:

[In Swedish]: "P. Nord är s.t. sold. J. Ehn i Åsen, >>Ehns>>, Alfta. G. 1851.  Sold. nr 20 vid Häls. reg. Bos. i Älvkarhed, Alfta.  Utfl. t. Bollnäs 1864."

[In English]: "Peter Nord was a son of the soldier, J. [Jonas Olsson] Ehn of Åsen >>[lived at] "Ehns

[house]", Alfta.  He was married in 1851.  [Pehr] was soldier number 20 with the Helsingland regiment, and he lived in Älvkarhed, Alfta.  He left for Bollnäs in 1864."

Note: In the Alfta Släktbok, ">>" on each side of a word indicates the name of the house.  In this case, Pehr lived in what we might call, "the old Ehns house," or "the house built by Mr. Ehns."

Pehr Jonsson-Nord was born 23 Aug 1830.

The wife Per married was Brita, the daughter of the soldier, A. Alftin of Svedja, Alfta [it is taken for granted that "A." stands for "Anders," and that Anders' daughter would have been called, "Brita Andersdotter."  Brita was born 1 Sep 1824 and left for Bollnäs in 1864.

Their children presumably born in Alfta included:

Brita, born 27 Aug 1841

Jonas, b. 12 June 1854

Kerstin, b. 16 Apr 1857

Per, b. 26 Oct 1859

Anders, b. 3 July 1862

All of these children also left fro Bollnäs in 1864.
